The USC Trojans sustained a major early recruiting loss for the 2027 class over the summer. But the Trojans have helped fire off a warning to that Southeastern Conference power: They won't stop recruiting that prospect.
Recruiting insider for 247Sports Blair Angulo dropped that update involving Donte Wright. The '27 defensive back from Long Beach Poly shut his recruiting process early on June 30 by choosing Georgia.
"Playing in the SEC was a big appeal, Wright said, as was the history of NFL production by coach Kirby Smart," Angulo shared.
But USC and one other Big Ten powerhouse isn't letting the foot off the gas pedal when it comes to courting Wright.
"Not long after Wright announced his pledge, he said that the likes of Oregon and USC reached out to let him know they don't plan to give up their pursuits," Angulo shared.
Smart and Georgia now face the pressure of trying to keep Wright from leaving their presence. He can't officially become a Bulldog until he signs his National Letter of Intent by December 2026, since again he's a '27 talent.
There are other factors at play for Georgia and Wright. He could entertain the idea of reclassifying if he believes he's completed all his prep goals. Or he can take visits to other schools while still committed to Georgia. The latter tactic, though, would increase Georgia's chances of losing Wright.
USC and head coach Lincoln Riley have successfully pulled off recruiting flips already. The Trojans' 2026 class features two former Oregon pledges. Quarterback Jonas Williams and defensive tackle Tomuhini Topui went from Ducks to Trojans during the spring.
Wright stars for a high school that brings a rich history of producing future Trojans. This USC recruiting staff has placed an emphasis on improving local ties on the trail. All the more reason to avoid ruling out Wright completely for USC.
