Second baseman Gleyber Torres is in his first season with the Detroit Tigers after signing a one-year, $15 million contract this past offseason, bringing veteran infield experience to a young and talented roster.

The 28-year-old middle infielder made his MLB debut for the New York Yankees in 2018 and finished third in AL Rookie of the Year voting. He also earned back-to-back All-Star Game selections in his first two seasons.

His tenure in the Bronx ended last year, however, when a combination of lackluster postseason performances and defensive liabilities—he led the league in errors with 18—prompted the Yankees to decline extending him a contract.

Torres has thrived once again in his first season in Detroit and was selected to his third All-Star Game this year.

With the Yankees making the World Series last year, manager Aaron Boone was tasked with managing the All-Star Game, and he chose his former second baseman to lead off for the American League. Torres admitted pregame that the decision had left him “surprised.”

In 2025, Torres has helped lead the Tigers to the best record in baseball at 59–38 entering the All-Star break.

Over 84 games for the Tigers so far this season, Torres has a .281 batting average, an .812 OPS, nine home runs, and 45 RBIs.

Torres has also made only three errors so far this season, a significant drop-off from the 18 he committed last year, signaling that the change of scenery in Detroit may have been all he needed to produce again.
