Newcastle United’s bold €80 million bid to sign a rising star has been rejected.
Newcastle United are working aggressively in the summer transfer window as they attempt to build a squad strong enough to compete in both the Premier League and the Champions League in the upcoming season.
Manager Eddie Howe and the recruitment team have already secured the signing of Swedish winger Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest in a £55 million [$73m]deal and brought in teenage Spanish forward Antonito Cordero on a free transfer from Malaga.
But even with those signings, the club has missed out on a few big targets. Matheus Cunha and Joao Pedro chose to join rival clubs, and now Bryan Mbeumo looks set to move to Manchester United instead.
Because of these setbacks, Newcastle have started looking at other young talents who could give them a boost in attack and now have turned their attention to Bundesliga breakout star and the French international Hugo Ekitike.
But the pursuit of the former PSG star has gotten off to a rocky start.
Eintracht Frankfurt rejects Newcastle United bid
According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Newcastle made a formal offer of €80 million [$92m] to sign Ekitike.

However, Frankfurt turned it down as the German club reportedly didn’t like the way the payment was structured and believe they can get more money from other clubs who are also interested.

The 22-year-old striker joined Eintracht Frankfurt last summer after leaving PSG but has quickly made a name for himself in the Bundesliga with 22 goals and 12 assists in 48 games last season.
The offer from Newcastle would have made Ekitike their most expensive signing ever, beating the €70 million [$81m] they paid for Alexander Isak in 2022.
