A day after selecting a pair of Tennessee Volunteers hurlers in Liam Doyle (No. 5 overall) and Tanner Franklin (No. 72), the St. Louis Cardinals completed Day 2 of the 2025 MLB Draft by using 10 of their 17 picks on collegiate pitchers.

St. Louis began the day by taking Oklahoma left-hander Cade Crossland in the fourth round (No. 120).

A transfer from Weatherford College (Texas), Crossland was hampered by a strained back muscle in his lone season this spring with the Sooners. He finished the season with a record of 5-5, to go with a 6.32 ERA and 84 strikeouts across 68 and one-thirds innings. According to a MLB.com scouting report, Crossland's fastball sits around 91-94, but has reached as high as 98. He also has a nasty changeup in his repertoire which baffles hitters. Prior to the draft, MLB.com listed Crossland as their 207th best prospect.

In the fifth round, the Cardinals took East Carolina right-hander Ethan Young (No. 150). Like Crossland, Young landed with the Pirates via the junior college ranks. Primarily used as a reliever with ECU this spring, he went 5-0 with a 3.84 ERA, and struck out 92 batters in 70 and one-thirds innings.

After taking Hawaii outfielder Matthew Miura in the sixth-round, the Cardinals added another pitcher in the seventh when they selected Payton Graham out of Gonzaga. Graham only pitched one game in 2025 before having to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery. Graham had increased the velocity on his fastball to around 96 mph before the injury. MLB.com had Graham, who was taken No. 210 overall, listed as their 211th best prospect prior to the draft.

Of the 21 players the Cardinals selected in the 2025 MLB Draft, 20 were college ballplayers. Only Ryan Mitchell, St. Louis' second-round selection (No. 55), was drafted out of high school.
