The 49ers are in another dilemma during the offseason with a WR on their roster. Jauan Jennings either wants a trade or extension. If he is traded, he could play the role of hometown hero.
The San Francisco 49ers didn’t have the season they were hoping for last year, but with training camp fast approaching, all eyes are on how they’ll bounce back. However, fresh drama has emerged: wide receiver Jauan Jennings reportedly wants a contract extension—or he wants out.
“49ers WR Jauan Jennings, who is scheduled to make $7.5 million this season in the final year of his deal, wants a new contract or a trade, per sources. 49ers extended Jennings’ deal last year, but that does not change how Jennings feels about this year,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted.
Jennings may not be a household name around the league, but he has become one of the top receivers in San Francisco. He could have easily been named Super Bowl LVIII MVP had the 49ers won. He became just the second player in NFL history to record both a passing and receiving touchdown in the Super Bowl.
The general belief is that the 49ers will meet his demands, especially given the team’s current lack of depth at wide receiver.
“I expect something similar will play out with Jennings. He probably will get a modest pay raise just before the first padded practice of training camp. Because the 49ers can't afford to trade him until they know Brandon Aiyuk has made a full recovery. And that process could take a year or two,” Sports Illustrated’s Grant Cohn wrote.
Still, if the 49ers do decide to move him, USA Today’s Tom Viera suggests Jennings could find himself back in his home state of Tennessee.

“It's also worth noting that new general manager Mike Borgonzi was not a part of the front office that traded for Ridley. That could lead Tennessee to search for another veteran upgrade as it looks to support Ward during his rookie season. Jennings played five college seasons with the Tennessee Volunteers and attended high school in Murfreesboro, which is roughly 35 miles from where the Titans play,” Viera wrote.
Jennings is known for giving maximum effort every time he steps on the field, but the chance to play close to home would bring added emotion and motivation. The Titans are focused on building around rookie quarterback Ward, and there may be no better addition than a reliable veteran receiver who’s still in his prime.
