Window closing? Texas Rangers must decide if this core can still compete

The Texas Rangers hit the All-Star Break with a B-grade and a big question: Is this core still built to win? A crucial second half will shape the future in Arlington.

As the 2025 MLB All-Star Break arrives, the Texas Rangers find themselves in a troubling position: not terrible, but not where a recent World Series champion should be. Hovering around .500, the Rangers earn a B-grade at the midway point — a mark that reflects their inconsistency more than their talent.

A strong showing to close the first half offered some relief. Texas wrapped up a 10-game road trip with a 5–1 win over the Astros, highlighted by homers from Adolis García and Marcus Semien, and a dominant 7⅔-inning performance from Nathan Eovaldi. Since returning from injury, Eovaldi has looked like an ace — a much-needed development for a staff that’s battled health issues all season.

Despite a team ERA that ranks among the league’s best (3.21), the Rangers’ offense has been uneven. García, while picking up the pace lately, is still batting just .228. Injuries to Tyler Mahle and others have tested the team’s depth, and Jacob deGrom’s health will remain under a microscope.

Where the Rangers Must Improve

  • Consistency at the plate, especially from streaky hitters like García and Jonah Heim.
  • Rotation support beyond Eovaldi and deGrom.
  • Bullpen help, as late-game leads haven’t been safe often enough.

With the AL Wild Card still within reach, the front office faces a defining choice: push for a postseason run, or begin reshaping the roster for the future.

Trade Deadline & Offseason Questions

García has reportedly drawn trade interest, and players like Mitch Garver or Andrew Heaney could be moved if the Rangers shift into sell mode. Their recent first-round draft pick, prep shortstop Gavin Fien, signals an eye toward long-term upside, but can that coexist with trying to win now?

The second half of the season could determine the franchise’s direction for years to come. If this core can’t turn it around, the Rangers may have no choice but to start breaking it up, while their window to contend quietly closes.
