Marlon Irlbacher reports that SC Braga have expressed interest in FC Köln midfielder Denis Huseinbasic. Sport Bildand the Kölner Geißblog confirm Irlbacher’s report while also emphasizing that no concrete talks between the Portuguese and Bundesliga club have taken place yet. The 24-year-old maintains an estimated market value of €2.8m.
Huseinbasic’s professional journey remains quite the interesting tale. Köln snatched him up from German fourth division side Kickers Offenbach in the summer of 2022 for a paltry €50,000 fee. Huseinbasic had no difficulty transitioning from the German fourth division to the first. He scored four Bundesliga and one Conference league goal in the 2022/23 campaign.
Huseinbasic nevertheless played less of a role for Köln during the 2023/24 relegation season. Scoring no goals and garnering just three assists, his estimated market value began to steadily dip from its peak of €5m in the spring of 2023. The now seven-times-capped Bosnia & Herzegovina international did play a significant role in Köln’s 2. Bundesliga promotion campaign last year.
It nevertheless remains to be seen if Huseinbasic can compete for playing time in Lukas Kwasniok’s squad this year. New acquisitions such as Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson and Tom Krauß may push Huseinbasic to the bench. Overall, Huseinbasic has made 92 competitive appearances for Köln over the last four years.
