The Philadelphia Phillies could be in the market for a closer at the trade deadline. Jose Alvarado received a PED suspension that will make him ineligible for the postseason.

Having a good closer can be the difference between a deep postseason run and going home early. Jordan Romano has been inconsistent at closer, and the Phillies have been giving Matt Strahm some ninth-inning opportunities. However, adding an elite closer should be one of the team's top priorities.

BALLCAP Sports' Jim Riley predicted the team would trade for Kyle Finnegan of the Washington Nationals before the trade deadline on July 31. Finnegan will be a free agent after the season, and the Nationals are set up to be sellers.

"One of the few true closers who will actually be dealt at the deadline," said Riley. "I think the Phillies go out and grab Finnegan."

Finnegan was an All-Star last season. He had a 3.68 ERA on the season and picked up 38 saves in 43 opportunities. He has 18 saves this season, but has only seen 24 opportunities through 90 games. However, his ERA is better at 3.12. He has 84 saves since the start of 2023.

The Phillies have World Series aspirations, and adding a player like Finnegan could be the key to them making a deep run in October. Not to mention, he could help them secure the National League East.
