Vote: Ames Tribune female Athlete of the Week for July 6-12

Here are the Ames Tribune female Athlete of the Week candidates for the week of July 6-12.

The week of July 6-12 saw regional softball competition get underway across the state.

The Class 5A No. 9 Ames softball team saw its record 30-win season come to a close in the 5A Region 6 semifinals with a 5-1 loss to Ankeny at Ames. The Little Cyclones ended the regular season with a 9-1 win over 5A No. 15 Indianola. 

Gilbert advanced to the 4A Region 2 championship game with an 11-2 quarterfinal win over Knoxville on July 10 and a 9-3 semifinal victory at No. 13 Grinnell on July 12. Ballard fell to Spencer by a 2-0 score in the 4A Region 7 quarterfinals on July 10 after ending the regular season with a 5-2 win at Roland-Story on July 8.

Nevada suffered a 15-0 loss to West Marshall in the 3A Region 7 quarterfinals on July 10 at State Center. Roland-Story bounced back from its loss to Ballard with an 8-0 3A Region 7 quarterfinal win over Mid-Prairie on July 10 at Roland, but the Norse fell at No. 7 West Liberty in the semifinals by a 7-0 score on July 12.

Collins-Maxwell saw its season end on July 9 with a 6-0 loss to No. 13 Martensdale St. Marys in 1A Region 8 competition at Collins.

There were several standout performances by high school softball players from the Ames area during the week.

Here are the Ames Tribune female Athlete of the Week nominees for the week of July 6-12. AmesTrib.com readers vote to determine the winner, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Camryn Johnson, Ames

Camryn Johnson, seen here in a game against Waterloo East on June 25, came up big for the Class 5A No. 9 Ames softball team during its 9-1 win over No. 15 Indianola to close out the regular season on July 10 at Ames.

Johnson was outstanding for the Class 5A No. 9 Ames softball team during its 9-1 win at No. 15 Indianola on July 10 at Ames.

Johnson went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs, and she also made three assists with no errors at shortstop. Johnson also recorded a hit in her final at-bat during the Little Cyclones' 5-1 5A Region 6 semifinal loss to Ankeny on July 12 at Ames.

Katie Sniezek, Gilbert

Sniezek was the sparkplug for the Gilbert softball team during its 11-2 4A Region 5 quarterfinal victory over Knoxville on July 10 at Gilbert.

Sniezek officially went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and two RBIs. She also stole a base and made one putout with no errors in the field at shortstop.

Madeline Schonhorst, Ballard

Schonhorst led the Ballard softball team to its 5-2 comeback win over Roland-Story to close out the regular season on July 8 at Roland.

Schonhorst hit a two-run homer in the top of the third inning to tie the score. She finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs and RBIs apiece.

Keely Oberender, Roland-Story

Oberender had a good night with the bat for the Roland-Story softball team during its 5-2 loss to Ballard to wrap up the regular season on July 8 at Roland.

Oberender went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. She also made three putouts with no errors at second base.

Cypress Erickson, Collins-Maxwell

Erickson gave a great effort for the Collins-Maxwell softball team during its 6-0 loss to No. 13 Martensdale St. Marys in the 1A Region 8 quarterfinals on July 9 at Collins.

Erickson hit a leadoff single for one of only two Collins-Maxwell hits during the game. She also made two putouts without an error in center field.
