From Italy: David de Gea now ‘pushing’ to reunite with ‘technically brilliant’ Man Utd teammate in Serie A

David de Gea is using his Manchester United ties to try and convince one of his former teammates to join him at Fiorentina.

Indeed, the veteran shot-stopper is preparing for another campaign between the sticks for the Italian outfit after penning a three-year deal to keep him at the club until June 2028.

He has enjoyed a career revival in Florence over the last 12 months, having chosen Fiorentina as the most suitable side to reintegrate himself into first-team action following a one-year hiatus in the aftermath of his controverial Old Trafford exit; it was claimed at the time that he had been offered fresh terms by United before they pulled the proposed contract offer and opted to release him instead.

Now, he’d like to have a familiar face join him with the Viola before the 2025/2026 campaign gets underway in the form of Victor Lindelof, who also ran down his contract with the Red Devils before bidding farewell to the M16 faithful in May.

Reports in Italy, relayed by Football Italia, state the goalkeeper is ‘pushing’ the Fiorentina board to pursue a move for his ex-defensive partner.

The experienced centre-half has yet to determine where he’ll be plying his trade next, having spent eight years in Manchester and, prior to that, five years in Portugal with Benfica.

Who’s interested in Lindelof following his United exit?

Lindelof, who turns 31 this Thursday, has been linked with a return to the Portuguese league as well as a host of top-flight suitors, including Brighton and Hove Albion, Crystal Palace and Everton – albeit all the way back in April.

He endured an injury-ridden final season in 2024/2025 and was limited to just six Premier League starts. Still, given his age, the Swede certainly still has plenty to give before he considers hanging up his boots for good. His counterpart Harry Maguire once hailed Lindelof as a ‘technically brilliant’defender, so he’ll be hoping to showcase such traits wherever he’s playing his football come the new term.
