Chelsea won a superb 3-0 victory against PSG last night, but we can’t rest on our laurels. This team suddenly feels close to a real contender – now is the time to fill those final holes, not sit back.

Former Blues midfielder Jon Obi Mikel has been one of the most vocal critics of this whole project, and even after a historic win he maintained that the Blues needed to get a top goalkeeper to really compete at the top.

Mikel claims Sanchez still not a top goalkeeper

“I still believe we do need a top, top goalkeeper. Robert Sanchez had a brilliant game today but going into the new season with the Champions League and the Premier League I think you still need another top goalkeeper that is going to come in and compete with him,” the ex-Chelsea man said.

“Healthy competition is important and we’ve seen that with the signing of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.”

Chelsea must mend the roof while the sun is shining

It feels harsh, but it’s hard to disagree with Mikel. Sanchez made some utterly superb saves in the game and did some great kicking, but also produced his typical couple of hairy moments. On this occasion the latter outweighed the former, but all too often it’s been the other way round. It feels harsh to call for his head now – but you’ve got to be consistent. Even Enzo Maresca, who has staunchly defended the Spaniard

The strong interest we showed in Mike Maignan of AC Milan before this tournament shows that even our sporting directors know that.

Still, a better defence will help Sanchez, and a better midfield will help create a better defence. Perhaps we can survive with Sanchez – but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t look to improve.
