South Jersey baseball produced three selections on the first day of the 2025 MLB Draft.
South Jersey baseball shined on the first night of the 2025 MLB Draft as three players from the seven-county area were selected on Sunday night.
The draft will conclude later today with rounds 4 through 20 in Atlanta, site of Tuesday's All-Star Game.
Caden Bodine, a Haddon Heights native, was chosen by the Baltimore Orioles with the 30th overall pick, a compensatory selection in the first round. The former Coastal Carolina star was considered the best defensive catching prospect in the draft and was the Buster Posey Award winner, given to the nation’s top catcher.
Frank Cairone, a recent Delsea Regional High School graduate, was selected in the supplementary second round (68th overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers. The left-handed pitcher posted a 0.48 ERA and struck out 94 batters over 44 innings during his senior season in the spring.
Cairone is the first player from Delsea drafted since Bryan Dobzanski was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 29th round of the 2014 draft.
Trevor Cohen, a Holy Spirit graduate and Brigantine resident, was picked in the third round (85th overall) by the San Francisco Giants. Cohen, was a three-year starting outfielder at Rutgers, was selected much higher than most draft projections.
Cohen batted .338 with four homers and 39 stolen bases in his collegiate career. He’s the third Rutgers player drafted by the Giants, joining Bill Malloy (1996, sixth round) and Robert Kenney (1967, 38th round.)
