The Houston Astros announced an update on left-handed slugger Yordan Alvarez.

Left-handed power hitter Yordan Alvarez is in his seventh major-league season after debuting for the Houston Astros in 2019 at 22 years old.

The Cuban slugger immediately dominated opposing pitching, taking home American League Rookie of the Year honors in his first year.

Since then, he’s cemented himself as an elite offensive threat, launching at least 30 home runs in each of the last four seasons.

Alvarez’s résumé already includes three consecutive All-Star selections and a World Series championship in 2022. He’s also finished in the top 10 of MVP voting twice despite offering limited value defensively.

Alvarez has been sidelined since May 5 (retroactive to May 3), initially placed on the 10-day injured list before being transferred to the 60-day IL on July 2. He’s been dealing with a right-hand fracture that was originally diagnosed as a muscle strain. Although the fracture has healed, inflammation has set in, and he’s received injections to address the irritation.

Before Sunday’s game against the Texas Rangers, general manager Dana Brown said, “Alvarez will be re-evaluated Thursday. I think once that’s over, the doctor could potentially clear him to start swinging the bat. As long as Yordan feels good, we’re going to try to expedite his return.” Brown added that Alvarez has “absolutely no pain in his hand.”

Getting Alvarez back would be huge for the Astros, who sit atop the AL West at 56–39, holding a six-game lead over the second-place Seattle Mariners.

In 2024, across 147 games, Alvarez batted .308 with a .959 OPS, smashed 35 home runs and drove in 86 runs—production that would only bolster an already postseason-bound Astros group.
