Outfielder Oneil Cruz is in his fifth major-league season after making his Pittsburgh Pirates debut in 2021.
The 26-year-old began his career at shortstop but later transitioned to the outfield because of defensive struggles up the middle and the team’s belief that his extraordinary athleticism would be better utilized in center field.
Cruz is best known for his elite power. He consistently grades out as one of the hardest hitters in baseball and owns the hardest-hit ball in Statcast era history—a home run recorded at 122.9 mph. That blast surpassed his previous MLB record of 122.4 mph and also broke the hardest-home-run record, held by Giancarlo Stanton at 121.7 mph.
During Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Twins, Cruz left early in the eighth inning with a hip-flexor injury.
Before Sunday’s series finale, interim manager Don Kelly explained that Cruz is still under evaluation. He decided to take him out of the starting lineup but expects him to be available off the bench.

Don Kelly said they're still evaluating Cruz, but anticipate him being available. As for tomorrow's Home Run Derby, "I would hope that he would be able to still participate." https://t.co/fO61BTewot
Cruz is scheduled to participate in the Home Run Derby on Monday, and it appears that will still be the case for now.
In 2025, Cruz has showcased his elite speed, currently leading the National League with 29 stolen bases. Through 84 games this season, he’s hit .209 with a .729 OPS, launching 16 home runs and driving in 37 runs.
With the Pirates again on the outside of playoff contention as the All-Star break nears, Cruz’s name has surfaced in trade talks, leaving Pittsburgh’s future outlook uncertain.
