Bucks to sign young Grizzlies point guard to answer PG question

Milwaukee makes another bold move.

The Milwaukee Bucks have already made a flurry of moves this offseason, and their latest will help fill a position of need.

Milwaukee made a major splash in free agency by signing Myles Turner to a four-year, $108.9 million contract. To create the necessary cap space, the team waived Damian Lillard and stretched the remaining $113 million on his contract over the next five years.

Now, the Bucks are set to add Cole Anthony to their backcourt. The 25-year-old point guard agreed to a contract buyout with the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday and now intends to sign with Milwaukee, according to Shams Charania of ESPN

Anthony was traded to Memphis as part of the package that sent Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic. However, with the Grizzlies already loaded with guard depth, the team opted to move off Anthony's $13.1 million salary via a buyout. He’ll provide much-needed point guard depth for Milwaukee and is expected to carve out a significant role in 2025-26.

Anthony has seen a steady decline in production since his career-best season in 2021-22, when he averaged 16.3 points, 5.7 assists and 5.4 rebounds across 31.7 minutes per game in 65 regular-season appearances.

Still, the North Carolina product is just 25 years old and will look to revitalize his career with the Bucks after a disappointing 2024-25 campaign in Orlando.

Anthony is a gifted athlete who has shown he can be effective both as a starter and off the bench. While nobody can fully replace Lillard, the Bucks' revamped group of young point guards should help the team remain competitive in a wide-open Eastern Conference.
