Cubs' Matthew Boyd signing looks like best move in MLB

Brilliance from Boyd.

Tough to imagine a free agent signing working out much better than this one.

The Chicago Cubs signed Matthew Boyd this offseason for two years and $29 million. He has since pitched like one of the best pitchers on the planet.

The stage that is Yankee Stadium didn't bother him one bit on Saturday. He allowed four hits in eight scoreless innings, and he could've gone the distance having only thrown 85 pitches, but the Cubs played it safe with their All Star.

"It was a masterful performance," manager Craig Counsell told reporters afterward.

Boyd lowered his season ERA to 2.34.

And in his last nine starts, Boyd has been even more dominant.

In that 56.1 inning span, Boyd has a 1.28 ERA, a 0.75 WHIP and 46 strikeouts.

Boyd is one of baseball's best stories, having long ago looked like injuries might end his career before totally revitalizing himself.

And now in Chicago, Boyd is a star, and the Cubs are quite grateful he's on their team.
