Fans stormed the field after Florida State upset No. 8 Alabama in dominant fashion in the season opener in Tallahassee on Saturday.
It’s been a wild ride for the Florida State Seminoles over the last two years. From ultimate highs to incredible lows and everything in between. But an upset of No. 8 Alabama to kick off the 2025 season was predictably met with one thing: a good, old-fashioned field storming.
As the final seconds ticked off the clock in a 31-17 upset of the Crimson Tide, Seminoles fans began hopping the rail at the newly renovated Doak Campbell Stadium. They flooded onto the field.
The win was everything coach Mike Norvell had hoped his program would become after undergoing a significant offseason overhaul. It was dominant.
Florida State took control early on, led by Boston College quarterback transfer Thomas Castellanos. Castellanos was not shy with his comments heading into the contest; he certainly did not fear Alabama.
And he made it count on Saturday. He was electric, guiding the team to a crisp offensive outing.
Castellanos finished with 152 yards passing, to go along with a team-leading 16 carries for 78 yards and a touchdown on the ground. That was enough to propel Florida State to an early lead, and the defense did the rest.
The Seminoles made sure to harass new Crimson Tide starting quarterback Ty Simpson. Simpson did his best but was clearly rattled throughout the night. He finished with 254 yards passing and two touchdowns without an interception, but he was just 23-of-43 passing. That inconsistency stung.
If there was a highlight for Alabama it was the emergence of receiver Germie Bernard, who caught a game-high eight passes for 145 yards. But Florida State limited everyone else, particularly star Ryan Williams. He was held to just five catches for 30 yards in the contest and ultimately left late in the fourth quarter due to an injury.
The win for Florida State cannot be understated. This is a program that won 13 games in 2023, only to disappear entirely amid a 2-10 campaign in 2024.
Now, the question will be how quickly can Florida State return to the ranks of the playoff contenders. Was Alabama overrated? Or is this Seminoles team capable of beating anyone on any given Saturday?
For at least one night, the fans won’t care a lick. They’re down on the field celebrating a huge win over a top-10 program.
