Portage County Week 2 high school football roundup: Aurora, Mogadore, Rootstown prevail

Included in our Week 2 football roundup, Aurora, Mogadore and Rootstown picked up impressive wins with the Rovers and Wildcats both moving to 2-0.

We had live coverage of Garfield's win over Warren JFK and Streetsboro's victory at Roosevelt. Here's a look at the other Week 2 games from across Portage County:

Aurora 47, Lutheran West 0

Aurora tailback Xavier Board runs untouched into the end zone to score against Revere on Friday, Sept. 13, 2024.

The Greenmen bounced back from a Week 1 heartbreaker with a shutout and 33 first-half points.

Aurora senior running back Xavier Board was stellar with 17 carries for 155 yards and three touchdowns and the Greenmen ran for 276 yards overall.

Aurora's Ryan Ziegler had an effective day at quarterback, completing eight of 12 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns against a single interception. Josh Harrell and Luke McGovern caught a TD pass apiece. Aurora (1-1) was particularly impressive defensively, holding Lutheran West to just 25 yards of total offense on 20 plays.

Rootstown 44, Springfield 6

Facing a Spartans' team fresh off its first opening win since 2017, the Rovers made a statement. Rootstown took a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and a 44-0 advantage into the fourth. The Rovers scored in pretty much every possible fashion. Rootstown had two defensive touchdowns — for the second straight week — as Kiel Reuting had a pick-six and Alex Ely took a fumble 10 yards to the end zone. Reuting also had a rushing touchdown, as did Max McEwuen and Damien Reuting. Blake Mullaly also scored in two different ways, with a 49-yard touchdown pass to Damien Reuting and a 28-yard field goal.

The Rovers (2-0) ended the night with huge advantages in nearly every category, including rushing yards (250-75) and passing yards (134-71).

Mogadore 22, Canton Central Catholic 7

Conner Lehner had two touchdowns for the second straight week to lead the Wildcats (2-0) to another impressive victory. Lehner scored the game's first touchdown from 15 yards out to give Mogadore a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. After the Crusaders scored from two yards out to take a 7-6 lead, the Wildcats bounced back with a Kade Thomas four-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a two-point conversion to take a 14-7 lead into the half. Lehner added the final points of the night on a 12-yard rushing score in the third quarter.

Mogadore dominated in most facets, with a sizable lead in first downs (20-5), rushing yards (262-85), passing yards (122-63) and total yards (384-148).
