Nebraska 3 vs Libscomb 0 – 25-13, 25-21, 25-15

Nebraska defeated Lipscomb soundly in three sets in front of about 5,000 fans in Allen Arena in Nashville. Lipscomb plays both #1 Nebraska and #7 Kentucky before the two top ten teams face off on Sunday at 11 am (CT) on ABC. The Nebraska Kentucky match will be competitive with great players filling positions on both teams. Before we get to that match, let’s talk about what happened tonight.

Coach Busboom Kelly began the match with veteran players like Harper Murray and Bergen Reilly on the court but by the second set she had many younger players out there. Freshmen setter Campbell Flynn started the second set alongside Teraya Siegler. Siegler has played backrow for Taylor Landfair thus far this season but played all six rotations later in the Lipscomb match.

We also enjoyed watching redshirt freshmen Skyler Pierce and freshmen middle blocker Manaia Ogbechie. Pierce was excellent. She finished with six kills on 15 attempts. Pierce jumps very well and has quick feet and arm as she gets to the ball. I expect she is a ready sub should Coach Busboom Kelly call her number. She looks ready for bigger and bigger moments.

Ogbechie covers the net in a similar fashion to Rebekah Allick. She keeps her feet ready and her hands high as she watches diligently for any opportunity to kill or block the ball. She ended the night with five kills on nine attempts for a great .556 hitting percentage.

Setter Campbell Flynn is an excellent addition to the roster. She sets a very fast offense getting the ball to hitting locations so quickly. She is calm and capable on the court. She too is ready for more action. She will continue to work on her set location as she misses that exact location sometimes. When she misses, the timing of the hitter is off just enough to make a kill difficult.

We also saw both Allie Sczech and Virginia Adriano on the right side. While the players above add depth to the Nebraska starting players, Sczech and Adriano continue to work to earn the starting stop. While this may only happen later in the season, each outing and opportunity matters. Sczech is clearly more offensively productive while Adriano seems to have the blocking edge.

Nebraska returns to the court on Sunday to play #7 Kentucky at 11 am CT. You can watch the match on ABC.
