Chicago Cubs vs. Colorado Rockies preview, Friday 8/29, 7:40 CT

The Cubs open a three-game series at Coors Field.

Friday notes:

  • TURN THIS SHIP AROUND, PLEASE: The Cubs have lost three straight games for only the third time this season. The previous two were May 6-9 and June 22-24. Their last four-game skid was June 23-26 of last year, when they lost at home to the Mets, then dropped three in a row at San Francisco. The Cubs are 123-93 since then, a winning percentage of .569. • THE TUCKER FILES: Kyle Tucker, last six games since Aug. 22: .409/.480/.909 (9-for-22) with two doubles, three home runs, five runs scored and seven RBI.
  • THE STARTERS ARE STILL STRONG: In their last 40 games since July 12, Cubs starting pitchers have posted a 3.09 ERA (74 earned runs in 215.2 innings), the lowest mark in the major leagues in that span. And, the rotation has allowed three runs or fewer in 27 of those games.
  • THIS DAY IN CUBS HISTORY: The Cubs blew a ninth-inning lead to the Padres but won the game 7-6 in the 13th on a sac fly by Ricky Gutierrez off Trevor Hoffman. It happened 25 years ago today, Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000.

The Cubs lineup was not available at posting time. Please check BCB social media for the Cubs lineup.

Rockies lineup:

Cade Horton, RHP vs. Germán Márquez, RHP

Cade Horton, last seven starts: 0.49 ERA, 0.784 WHIP, just one home run allowed in 37 innings.

The average for those seven is fewer than six innings per start because he had to leave one of them with a blister. No permanent damage and he was really good last time out against the Angels.

Coors Field will be an interesting challenge for him, as it would be for any pitcher. He held the Rockies to four hits and two runs in six innings May 27 at Wrigley Field, with six strikeouts.

That’d do just fine tonight.

Germán Marquez has been out for a month with right biceps tendinitis. He’s being activated from the injured list to make this start after two Triple-A rehab starts. He maxed out at 76 pitches, so might still be on a pitch limit.

He was Horton’s opponent in that May 27 game and allowed the Cubs two runs in six innings. The Cubs eventually won the game in 11.

Hopefully, the bats come to life tonight in Denver.
