FPI ranks Georgia football among the top 5

ESPN released their first Football Power Index (FPI) rankings for the 2025 season and the Georgia Bulldogs were ranked as the No. 2 team in FPI rankings.

The Football Power Index is a predictive ranking system that quantifies team strength. It is used to predict games and season results in football. FPI is extremely useful in college football because team strength is tougher to gauge due to the high number of teams in Division I and the uneven strength of conferences (Power 4 vs. Group of 5, SEC vs. Big Ten, etc.).

Georgia comes in with a 21.5 FPI, ranking only behind Texas (24.5) in the FPI rankings. Overall, there are six teams ranked inside the top 10 from the SEC (Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Tennessee), and 12 teams in the top 25. FPI, to the chagrin of some college media pundits, tends to rank the SEC above most other conferences.

The Bulldogs also have the second highest percentage to make the college football playoffs, accoridng to ESPN, with a 75.6% chance to make it, only behind Texas (87%).

Rounding out the top 10 in the ESPN FPI rankings, three teams from the Big Ten (Ohio State, Penn State, Oregon) and Notre Dame make the list.
