Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has found a new club.
United career
The Serbian spent five years at United after a successful career at Chelsea.
The 37-year-old played 189 times for the Red Devils, scoring four goals between 2017-2022.
Despite being in teams that finished second and third in the Premier League, he did not win a trophy of any kind.
After United
Matic left the club in 2022 after the ending of his contract and just before the Erik ten Hag era took place.
He joined AS Roma for one season before departing for Rennes in 2023.
The midfielder would only play 13 matches for the French side before moving to Olympique Lyonnais in the winter of 2024, where he would play 55 times, scoring one goal.
Matic was not involved on the pitch against United last year in the Europa League quarter-final but he was involved in a war of words off the field with the Red Devils’ keeper Andre Onana, labelling him one of the worst keepers in United’s history.
New project
The Serbian international left the French side at the end of his contract and it was reported that he was close to signing for Italian side U.S. Sassuolo Calcio.
The Italians have now officially confirmed the move on their club website stating, “US Sassuolo Calcio announces that it has completed the registration of the player Nemanja Matić until June 30, 2026, with automatic renewal for the following season subject to certain contractual conditions being met.”
They also added that, “with a unique record, the Serbian midfielder is the most decorated player to ever play for the black and greens. From the entire black-green family, welcome Nemanja!”
