Spartans Wire staff predicts Michigan State football's record, notable wins in 2025

Check out our record and notable wins predictions for the Spartans this upcoming season

Can Michigan State get back to a bowl game this season? That's something the Spartans Wire crew has weighed in on as we are only days away from opening kickoff.

Michigan State football opens up the 2025 season later this week, with many hesitantly optimistic about the Spartans this season. The last three years have been mostly rough for Michigan State, with the Spartans being the only Big Ten team to fail to reach a bowl game during that span. But things appear to be on the right trajectory now, with Michigan State looking like a much improved team this fall. The question, though, is whether or not that improvement is enough to get the Spartans back to a bowl game.

The Spartans Wire crew is back again this year to provide our preseason thoughts on Michigan State, and whether or not we like their chances of hitting at least six wins. So with that being said, check out our record predictions for the Spartans this upcoming season below:

Record: 7-5 (4-5 in Big Ten)

Notable win(s): Boston College, at Indiana and Michigan

The national media is sleeping on the Spartans this season, and I anticipate we are going to see a Michigan State team that surprises some folks this fall. I have the Spartans getting off to a strong start to the season, with notable wins over Boston College, Indiana and Michigan to get to 6-2 and bowl eligibility before the end of October. After that, though, I predict them to go on a three-game slide before winning the finale over Maryland.

Ultimately, I think Michigan State is still one year away from truly hitting their potential ceiling with a third-year starter in Aidan Chiles, but with that being said, I expect them to at a minimum to hit six wins and snap a three-year bowl drought. If they don't, then Jonathan Smith should enter next season on the hot seat.

Record: 7-5 (5-4 in Big Ten)

Notable win(s): at USC and at Iowa

Michigan State is in a weird spot, with Jonathan Smith needing to take a leap, in order to not lose this fanbase or the build of his program.Unfortunately, the schedule actually slates tougher than initially expected. I think MSU gets tripped up early by Boston College, but it is the wake up call this staff needs to win some key Big Ten games, including clipping USC in LA and a daunting win over Iowa in Kinnick in November. As for Michigan, I can't quite pick the Spartans to get the job done there, yet, but if Smith wants to show he has some fire in East Lansing, the Spartans will take that game and push 8 wins.

Record: 10-2 (7-2 in Big Ten)

Notable win(s): Boston College, at Indiana, and Michigan

I think that last year's Michigan State team has led to too much of a negative outlook on this year's Michigan State team. Last year, Jonathan Smith had to scramble to put a competitive football team on the field. In hindsight, the 5-7 record probably shouldn't have been too surprising all things considered. However, at least two of those losses, Boston College and Michigan, easily could've gone either way, and we could've seen a 7-5 MSU team with a patchwork roster. This year, Jonathan Smith has had the time to install his system, instill his culture, and upgrade at positions of need through the portal. I believe Aidan Chiles is poised to be one of the best quarterbacks in the Big Ten when it's all said and done. Also, importantly, the schedule-makers were kind to MSU this year. There is no Ohio State on the slate, they play Penn State and Michigan at home, and their rematch with Boston College will also be at home. Right now, looking at the schedule, I know my prediction might be bullish, but I think these are a lot of winnable games. I am expecting they lose to Penn State, then split the road games against Indiana and Nebraska. And that's it. Go Green.
