TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Outside of injured Alabama running back Jam Miller (collarbone), only one other Crimson Tide player is in jeopardy of missing the season opener at Florida State.

To kick off the first game week of the 2025 season, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer spoke to reporters at the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility and provided an update on Jaeden Roberts, who has been in concussion protocol since the team’s first preseason scrimmage.

“I would say Jaeden Roberts is still in question, just with what he’s going through in the protocol and the process there,” DeBoer said on Monday. “He’s progressing, he’s progressing. So, we’ll kind of see here.”

Roberts is one of three returning starters along the Crimson Tide’s offensive line. He started 12 games last year, missing only a home game against FCS foe Mercer. However, Roberts did split reps at right guard with Geno VanDeMark, as he battled injuries in Year 4 at Alabama.

With Roberts missing time due to a concussion this preseason, VanDeMark once again stepped in and practiced with the first-team offensive line leading up to the Tide’s season opener. Should Roberts miss the Florida State road game, VanDeMark is likely to start at right guard.

“Geno was here a year ago, was battling, and we threw him out there in a couple series a game, and he would do a great job,” DeBoer said. “I’ve referred to him as Swiss Army knife guy. He can go out there and do a lot of things, so he’s really valuable to us. And really a lot of confidence, not just by me, but I know everyone out there offensively believes in him, and he’s doing a nice job.

“Really feel like he’s hasn’t skipped a beat at all. He was in there competing for that spot in the first place all along the way. There’s an energy that Geno, as you get to know him, that you really appreciate, and I think he adds that to our offensive line in his own way.”

Alabama-Florida State is scheduled for Saturday, August 30, at 2:30 p.m. CT (on ABC).
