Terry Francona: 'We don't really have a road map' for injured Reds pitcher Hunter Greene

When Hunter Greene returns from his long injured list stint is anyone's guess.

When Hunter Greene returns from his long injured list stint is anyone's guess, and it's back to the Reds Player Development Complex for now as his injury concerns drag on.

Reds manager Terry Francona told reporters Wednesday, July 9 that Greene was set to return to the development complex in Goodyear, Arizona, in the hope of progressing from the recurring tightness in his groin area that derailed a promising start to his 2025.

“We don’t really have a road map," manager Terry Francona said when asked for the plan ahead. "We’ve kind of talked a ton with him. When you ask a guy to go out and pitch and compete and give it his all, he’s got to feel confident that when he lets it go, he’s going to be OK. So we want to get him to the point where that’s the case. He’s the only one that’s going to know that and tell us.”

The development complex is the Reds' spring training home. Greene lives nearby.

Hunter Greene, here on June 3 in his last outing before being placed on the injured list, is being sent to the Reds' development complex at their spring training home to try to work past his injured groin.

Greene (4-3, 2.72 ERA in 2025) first suffered the injury in-game May 7 against the Atlanta Braves and aggravated it in late May. He was scratched from a rehab start at Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday, July 8.

Results this week of another MRI on the area came back clean enough that Francona said the club was "really pleased," but Greene's discomfort has prevailed. Asked what hurdles remained in light of an MRI that was received positively, Francona said the team had to act based on the symptoms Greene was reporting.

"We were really happy that it showed healing," Francona said, "but if he's feeling something, whether it's not so much pain or just feeling... fatigued. We've got to give him a chance to get that out of there."

Greene rejoined the club on its last road trip. He threw a simulated-game inning last week at Boston's Fenway Park followed by a bullpen session Saturday in Philadelphia in preparation for what was to be the first start Tuesday in a brief rehab assignment with Louisville.

Greene last pitched for the Reds in MLB action June 5. He pitched in just three games after returning from the IL prior to going back on it.
