Weekend Wrap

Texas A&M’s women’s soccer team is off to a 2-0-2 start after pulling out a 2-1 win at Ellis Field Saturday night. The Aggies took an early 1-0 lead in the 25th minute with Trinity Buchanan scored her third goal of the season with assists from forward Taylor Jernigan and defender Riley Crooks. UConn (1-1) tied the game in the 42nd minute and the game would stay that way until the 86th minute, when Jernigan scored her first goal of the season off of assist from fellow forward Holly Storer.

Aggie soccer remains undefeated as late goal leads A&M past UConn

Texas A&M’s women’s soccer team is off to a 2-0-2 start after pulling out a 2-1 win at Ellis Field Saturday night.

The Aggies took an early 1-0 lead in the 25th minute with Trinity Buchanan scored her third goal of the season with assists from forward Taylor Jernigan and defender Riley Crooks. UConn (1-1) tied the game in the 42nd minute and the game would stay that way until the 86th minute, when Jernigan scored her first goal of the season off of assist from fellow forward Holly Storer.

The Aggies will the University of Denver in Denver Thursday evening, then return home to play Lafayette College next Saturday night.

Volleyball season begins Monday night

The ninth-ranked Texas A&M volleyball team starts its season with a tough contest on the road, facing No. 11 Minnesota in the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s First Serve event in Sioux Falls, S.D. The senior-heavy Aggies will be playing in the event for the second time in program history and the first time in 28 years.

A&M brings back nearly all of its production from last year, with 96.8% of their kills and 94.9% of their blocking returning from 2024.

Hoops adds a point guard

Bucky McMillan has added to his first basketball team at Texas A&M with the addition of European guard Eemil Martinez late Friday. Martinez is a recent graduate of Drive Academy in Finland, which has produced a number of players who have moved on to play collegiately in the United States. Martinez is only 5-foot-10, but has a reputation for playing tenacious defense and can shoot from long distance, two things McMillan values highly.

Aggies fight for roster spots in final NFL preseason game

This weekend saw the third and last game of the NFL preseason, and a number of Aggies had their final chance to make their case to make a 53-man roster. Other players who are locks to make the team either played very little or didn’t play at all.

One player who has made a strong case to make a team after being undrafted is wide receiver Jahdae Walker, who caught the game-winning touchdown pass with 2 seconds left as the Chicago Bears beat the Kansas City Chiefs 29-27. Walker caught 3 passes for 37 yards in the game and caught 8 passes for 98 yards and a pair of scores in the three preseason games. Defensive tackle Shemar Stewart, who was hurt early in training camp, did not play.

Carolina Panthers safety Demani Richardson appears to have made a strong case to make the team, as he played briefly and made just 1 tackle in a 19-10 loss to Pittsburgh. DeMarvin Leal made 3 tackles for the Steelers as he fights for a roster spot. Defensive tackle Bobby Brown III did not play for Carolina.

A pair of Aggies got their work in for the Philadelphia Eagles in a 19-17 win over Aaron Glenn’s New York Jets. Receiver Ainias Smith caught a pair of passes for 10 yards, returned a kickoff 18 yards and returned a pair of punts for a total of 7 yards. Punter Braden Mann averaged 52 yards per punt on his six kicks, including a 66-yarder which surely pleased the coaching staff. He also made a tackle, which surely did not please the coaching staff.

Defensive end Micheal Clemons, who had been rumored to be on the bubble for the Jets before a number of injuries at defensive end, did not play. Neither did wide receiver Josh Reynolds.

Former Aggie linebacker Buddy Johnson made 7 tackles in a 31-13 Dallas win over Atlanta. Johnson, who was with the Cowboys all of last season, seems to have the inside track on another season in Dallas. Falcons left tackle Jake Matthews and Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson did not play.

Two members of Texas A&M’s 2024 defense were busy for the Indianapolis Colts in a 41-14 drubbing of the Cincinnati Bengals. Linebacker Solomon DeShields had 2 tackles, as did corner BJ Mayes. Mayes also had a pass defensed. Defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson had 5 tackles for the Bengals, but fellow Aggie Shemar Stewart did not play. Neither did Indianapolis cornerback Jaylon Jones, who was hurt early in training camp but returned to practice last week.

Former Texas A&M running back Trayveon Williams carried the ball once for 4 yards and caught 2 passes for 10 yards as the Cleveland Browns beat the L.A. Rams 19-17. Unsurprisingly, all-world defensive end Myles Garrett didn’t play.

Defensive tackle Jayden Peevy had 3 tackles and a quarterback hit as New Orleans lost to Denver 28-19.

Jacksonville defensive back Antonio Johnson, who is rumored to be on the bubble with the Jags, did not play in a 14-6 loss to Miami. Linebacker Tyrel Dodson did play briefly for the Dolphins, picking up a tackle. Running back De’von Achane, who is dealing with a calf injury, did not play for Miami.
