The St. Louis Cardinals scratched left fielder Alec Burleson from their lineup on Friday afternoon less than two hours before first pitch of their series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Burleson's scratch was due to right wrist discomfort after he injured the wrist on an awkward swing in Thursday's win, according to MLB.com's John Denton.
Rookie outfielder Nathan Church will replace Burleson in the lineup and play in centerfield and Lars Nootbaar will move to left field.
Cardinal's injuries keep coming
Burleson is the third mainstay in the Cardinal's lineup who's dealt with injury in the past 10 days alone.
First baseman Willson Contreras missed four games dealing with a foot injury. Centerfielder Victor Scott was placed on the injured list on Sunday with a left ankle sprain, and second baseman Brendan Donovan joined Scott on the injured list the next day with a left groin strain.
Now, the Cardinal's lose another starter as Burleson deals with a wrist injury. However, if you want to look at the one positive piece of injury new lately, the Cardinals expect third baseman Nolan Arenado to return soon.
Arenado has been on the injured list since August 1, but has been rehabbing at the Cardinals' Spring Training complex in Florida.
The Cardinals' currently sit at 64-65 with 33 games remaining. St. Louis has won three of their last four games after losing five straight, to keep themselves alive in the National League wild card race.
However, sitting four games back in the wild card, the Cardinals need to get healthy and get hot if they want to make the postseason this year.
