Daniel Dubois reflects on his most recent loss and what he’ll do going forward.
Following his second knockout loss to Oleksandr Usyk, Daniel Dubois spoke to talkSPORT about what transpired and all the drama since including Dubois leaving his trainer, signing a new manager, his father’s role in his career, and all the talks of a pre-fight party that some attribute to his poor performance. Check out some of what Dubois had to say on these topics below.
Dubois on what he’s been up to since the most recent loss to Usyk
“You know, just reflecting on everything and get ready for the next step now. Still got plenty to give but, yeah, it’s just reflection time.
“I’ve come up against one of the best in the world, and a southpaw on top of that. Yeah, I could’ve done better but this is how it goes sometimes. And I don’t feel deflated or defeated in myself, I just need to learn and learn about myself and improve myself.”
On whether it was his decision to part ways with trainer Don Charles
“Yeah, 100%. Just thinking, looking back, Don’s been great for me, we won a world title together. But I just thinking about looking forward and how I can improve myself and, yeah, that was my decision.”
On whether a new trainer can get more out of him
“I hope so. I’m willing to give it everything I’ve got, everything I’ve got left now at this stage of my career and become two-time heavyweight champion of the world. That’s my goal. I’m willing to do anything to get to that.”
On whether Tony Sims will be his new trainer
“I can’t say for now, to be honest. I can’t say for now. I need to sit down and talk with my team first properly about everything, how the structure’s going to be, but there will be an announcement soon on that for sure.”
On bringing Sam Jones on as his new manager and what he’ll bring to the table
“He does a lot of work behind the scenes as I’ve seen myself, he’s not just a big mouth. He does a lot of work behind the scenes and he talks up for you. And moving forward, sort of a new beginning for me that’s all part of it, yeah.”
On all the rumors of a pre-fight party that some attribute for taking him out of his zone
“No, it worked with AJ and Anthony’s not that bad. I don’t even want to talk on that too much. That’s not why anything went wrong in the fight. I look to myself and look to what I could’ve done better and things like that. But, yeah, it worked the first time with AJ so it’s a whole new beginning for me moving forward now where I’ve got to change and get it right.”
On those who believe his father is too invovled in his career
“No, I don’t think he’s too involved. I think he’s looking out for me, he’s looking out for my best interest and moving forward I’m learning as well and I’m just deciding really what direction we’re going to go in for this next step.”
