The Indiana Fever entered Sunday’s matchup against the Connecticut Sun on a two-game skid, having dropped contests to the Dallas Wings and Washington Mystics.

While the Fever remain 18-16 overall and afloat despite star point guard Caitlin Clark being sidelined with a groin injury, things worsened in the first half against the Sun.

Amid the team’s recent injury struggles, which have also included season-ending losses for Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald, guard Sophie Cunningham went down in visible pain. She clutched her knee and needed assistance to reach the locker room, and the Fever medical staff subsequently ruled her out for the remainder of the game.

Slow-motion footage captured the exact moment the injury appeared to occur. Bria Hartley of the Sun drove left to the lane and, while attempting a pass out of a double team applied by Cunningham near the baseline, seemingly collided with Cunningham’s right leg.

Fans reacted to Cunningham's injury:

"Heartbreaking. What a season. Too many injured players across the league," a fan said.

Someone else added, "Ugh! Not Sophie!"

Another person wrote, "I want to see the camera angle from the backboard.... that looks like she intentionally hurt Sophie Cunningham."

"Prayers for Sophie," one more fan commented.

Sophie Cunningham, in her first season with the Indiana Fever after six years with the Phoenix Mercury, has been one of the team’s most vital players—especially amid injuries to Clark, Colson, and McDonald.

Through 29 games, Cunningham has averaged 8.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 0.9 steals per game, while shooting 47.7% from the field, 44.3% from three-point range, and 87.5% from the free-throw line.

With just nine games remaining in the regular season following Sunday’s clash against the Sun, the Fever face a challenging stretch. Clark’s return remains uncertain, and Cunningham’s availability moving forward is now in question.
