Old, new Boston Celtics governors share loss of title for Wyc Grousbeck a formality

The rumors of Wyc Grousbeck's demise as a relevant member of the Boston Celtics may have been exaggerated.

The rumors of Wyc Grousbeck's demise as a relevant member of the Boston Celtics may have been exaggerated. Or at least that is the point of view hinted at in a recent interview by Boston Globe reporter Adam Himmelsbach with the former lead governor and owner of the Celtics Wyc Grousbeck and current majority owner Bill Chisholm.

Speaking to the Globe after the sale of the team to Chisholm's group was made official in the eyes of the NBA and the law, the duo shed some light on how they saw Grousbeck's role with the team moving forward. Reports suggesting a diminished role for the former Boston Basketball Partners Limited group head once the team was in Chisholm's hands may have played a role in that perspective -- and Grousbeck and Chisholm's words in the interview. "The day-to-day operational approach here is the same as it ever was," offered Chisholm on that dynamic.

"Wyc and I are arm in arm here, leading the charge with the Celtics," he added. "Frankly, the change that needed to be made was more of a league issue. Wyc’s ownership dipped below 15%, but it dipped below 15% for good reason."

"We had a lot of demand for investors to put money in, so we raised a little more money," explained the private equity magnate. "I think that was in the best interest of everyone and the Celtics, because we want to make sure we have all the firepower necessary to chase championships, and Wyc has been that kind of team player all along."

"When it became clear the governor title was not going to be available because of technical reasons, because of math, Bill said, ‘Well, then we’re just not going to use that word around the office,’" echoed Grousbeck. "So that says a lot about Bill, that he doesn’t care. He just wants to do the right thing for the team, and I feel the exact same way. We’re shoulder to shoulder."
