Auburn opens its season against Baylor next Friday.
Hugh Freeze and his staff began prepping for the opener and the first several games back in June.
“We feel like we’re in a decent spot,” Freeze said Monday. “[Friday] and Saturday were good days to refresh ourselves on what we feel good about in base downs and who really are they (Baylor).”
Brushing up on Baylor
Baylor finished last season 8-5 and sixth in the Big 12 with a 6-3 conference record. The Bears return some of their leading players from last season, like quarterback Sawyer Robertson, running back Bryson Washington and wide receiver Josh Cameron.
“They (Baylor) have a lot returning,” Freeze said. “They finished their season really strong and I believe most have them picked to do well in their conference, if not play for the championship in it.”
Freeze is making sure that Auburn’s familiar with Baylor’s new additions from the transfer portal as well.
“We’ve done our research on what the additions are,” Freeze said. “You’re not quite sure exactly how they fit into their depth chart right now with the number of returners that they have, but I’m certain it added value to them in some ways.”
Auburn working Baylor prep into practice
Even with Baylor bringing in 24 transfers, Freeze feels that Baylor head coach Dave Aranda won’t stray too far away from what he knows.
“We’re not going to change a whole lot offensively from what we’ve done in the past, and I doubt Dave is going to change a whole lot of what has been really good to him,” Freeze said. “He knows what he is doing on the defensive side.”
Auburn plans to start scout team work this weekend, but is slowly working it into practice. There was one period in both Monday and Tuesday’s practice where it was offensive/defensive choice for 10 plays.
“We tell them what we want and they make it look as close as they can,” Freeze said. “And then they do the same for 10 plays. I think right now, keeping the speed of the game up is important and the physicality of it.”
Kickoff against Baylor is set for 7 p.m. CST on Aug. 29.
