The Boston Red Sox have been one of the hottest teams in baseball since just before the All-Star break, playing their way into a playoff spot where they now control their own destiny down the stretch of the MLB season.

A major factor in Boston’s surge has been the infusion of young talent from Triple-A, most notably Roman Anthony—the top prospect in all of baseball—who has quickly earned a spot in the leadoff role.

Another promising piece of the Red Sox future, Marcelo Mayer, had also stepped up in a big way. But on Sunday, the team received devastating news: Mayer’s rookie campaign has come to an end.

Alex Cora Announces Injury Update

Manager Alex Cora announced that Mayer will undergo season-ending wrist surgery, stemming from an injury suffered on July 23. The procedure carries a recovery timeline of roughly three months, ruling him out for the rest of the season and costing Boston a key contributor just as rosters are set to expand from 26 to 28 players in September.

The Red Sox are looking to complete a sweep on Sunday against the Miami Marlins with ace Garrett Crochet on the mound. Boston enters the series finale at 68-56 overall, tied with the Seattle Mariners for the top Wild Card spot. The New York Yankees trail both teams by 1 1/2 games, while the Cleveland Guardians sit 3 1/2 games back on the outside looking in.

While Boston has already been operating without Mayer for several weeks, his absence looms large. His defensive versatility across the infield and presence as a reliable bat would have been valuable assets down the stretch.

Before the injury, Mayer appeared in 44 games this season, batting .228 over 127 at-bats. He recorded 29 hits, four home runs, and 10 RBIs during that stretch.
