I’d greet Big Blue Nation with a “Happy Hump Day!” but that’s not the case. I’m sorry, but my patience is running thin. Can we just get to Kentucky football season already?
I enjoy speaking with members of the Kentucky football team. We chatted with plenty of players and offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan on Tuesday. There’s still so much meat left on the bone, but I can’t lie to you. I’m ready for the games to get here already.
Preseason college football chatter can only fill the void so much. I feel like a dog chasing its tail, spinning round and round until I’m dizzy. There are only so many forecasts of the future that I can handle. Let’s get to the games. PLEASE! The good news? We only have a few more days until we receive a week zero appetizer. Until then, here’s what’s happening around Big Blue Nation.
Kentucky Still Doesn’t Have a Starting Quarterback
Big Blue Nation has been operating under the assumption that Zach Calzada will be under center when the Wildcats open the season at Kroger Field against Toledo, yet nobody has said it outright. Missouri is the only other SEC team that hasn’t officially announced its starting quarterback.
Why such a delay? In part, it’s because of the play of Cutter Boley. The Kentucky native has created a buzz throughout camp because of his growth this offseason. Ja’Mori Maclin can hardly recognize him after the transformation, in a good way.
“Cutter’s doing a lot of really good things, and I think you guys know that. Where he’s come from this year to last year, his mental approach, how calm he is out there. He is pushing the needle on this in a big way,” said the Kentucky offensive coordinator.
Boley is pushing the needle by accelerating his processor. He’s making all of the right decisions, and it’s made him more consistent in practice.
More from the Kentucky Wildcats
In addition to a conversation with Bush Hamdan, KSR also spoke to Boley, Maclin, Shiyazh Pete, and running backs coach Jay Boulware following Tuesday’s practice. Fall camp has been a grind, and that’s the point. The Kentucky football coaches have stress-tested this team to ensure they’re ready for the grueling 2025 Kentucky football schedule.
“The harder stuff we do together, the closer we get together. It’s in that bond of doing hard stuff together that gets us tougher,” said Pete.
Two Kentucky Football Players Tabbed Preseason All-SEC
The final days of Watch List SZN are here. Zach Calzada was named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list, while two Wildcats earned Preseason All-SEC honors from the league’s coaches. Punter Aidan Laros and offensive guard Josh Braun were named to the third team. The latter is no stranger to All-SEC selections. He earned the honor following his 2023 season while playing at Arkansas.
One Final Check-In Before Game Week
Even though preseason chatter can be dizzying, we’ve got some more for Big Blue Nation. 11 Personnel is hitting the road to visit with our friends from Monticello Bank where we will provide one final Kentucky Football Fall Camp vibe check before game week begins. Until it hits the KSR YouTube Channel, our pal Jack Pilgrim has plenty of Kentucky basketball chatter for you with a new edition of Sources Say.
An 8-4 Kentucky Football Season?!?!?
Kentucky football fans play a game of see-saw during the month of August. One moment, you’re piecing the puzzle pieces together to map out a successful season. The next, you’re ready to burn it all to the ground and bracing for the worst case scenario.
Over the last two years, Steven Peake has put the Kentucky football season in the hands of EA Sports College Football. You never know what the video game simulation is going to pop out. This year’s result was quite a surprise. Kentucky capped off the 2025 campaign in the snow, where the Wildcats upset Louisville in overtime for their eighth win. Sign me up for that right now.
Kentucky is getting a New Area Code
Move over 502, there’s a new phone number coming to the Louisville area. As the number of 502 phone numbers nears a finality, they’re adding the new three-digit are code to phone numbers beginning in 2027. We learned on Tuesday that 761 will join the likes of the 606, 859, and 270. Get ready to learn 761.
Coming Soon to a Tailgate Near You
The Commonwealth is receiving a bit of reprieve from the August heat. It almost feels like football season. The tailgate setups are ready to roll outside of Kroger Field. They’re ready to crack open a couple of cold ones. This morning, I had the pleasure of sharing a new Bud Light can that folks will surely be sipping on during game days in Lexington. Fall Saturdays can’t get here quick enough.
