LaNorris Sellers reveals how Mike Shula uses poop to motivate QBs

South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers revealed how offensive coordinator Mike Shula is using poop to motivate his quarterbacks.

It’s not every day a toilet metaphor inspires a potential Heisman Trophy candidate. But such may be the case for for South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who has had his fair share of poop flung at him in fall camp.

Metaphorically, of course. It turns out poop is a favorite motivator for new offensive coordinator Mike Shula.

“He has this like cast of like poop,” Sellers explained recently. “And he’s just like, ‘You just took a dump right on my desk’ if I do something bad. So if I do something bad he’ll just be like, ‘Go get the dump off my desk.’ So if you do something bad that’s usually what he does.”

Come again? No, really, that one will need some explanation.

“He leaves it in his office,” Sellers said of the fake poop. “He’s like, ‘Go get the dump off my office desk.’ You hand it to him, he just throws it on the table, he’s like, ‘That’s what you just did to me.'”

However juvenile, the message seems to be getting through to the South Carolina quarterbacks this fall. Sellers, as the veteran in the group, has been least subjected to it.

He’s making the fewest mistakes currently. But that’s not to say he’s immune from some stinky plays.

“I think my thing was most of my poop experience, whatever you want to call it, was like carrying out fakes,” Sellers explained. “He tells me every day, ‘Carry out your fakes, carry out your fakes.’ So it’s kind of like if he says it once, he’s like, ‘Carry out your fake.’ Now if it comes to like two or three times, it’s like, ‘OK, go get the poop.’

“And then bonehead stuff like if you flip sides on a quick game call. If you throw it late over the middle. Anything like that.”

Most of the backups have had their fair share of poop flung in their direction this fall. That’s just the nature of the beast when working with Shula.

“I haven’t a lot, but Cutter (Woods), Air (Noland), those guys have done it a lot just because they don’t really know the system,” Sellers said. “So obviously if you don’t know it, you’re going to make some mistakes. It happens quite a bit. Jimmy Francis. A lot. It’s a lot.”

Sellers revealed when the poop metaphors started becoming a serious reality for South Carolina. It’s a recent trend, but it’s one that seems to be sticking. And it doesn’t seem to be a case of just throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks. It seems to be paying dividends, according to Sellers.

“Last year I think was the first time,” Sellers said. “It didn’t really come out last year because he wasn’t really the OC. But this year he’s kind of abused it like it’s his now, so he can do whatever he wants.”

What does the fake poop look like? It’s not just a poop emoji, a kind of casual, fun replica, Sellers explained.

“No, it looks like real poop,” he said. “I wish I could go get it. It looks like, you sit it in your hand, it looks like poop.”

Sellers and South Carolina will be looking to produce as little as possible of it this year from Shula. Keep the coach happy and the poop stays put. An admirable goal, to say the least.
