The Orioles are searching for a new manager after they fire Brandon Hyde in May. A potential replacement could be a former player turned into a manager.

The Baltimore Orioles have been without a full-time manager since May, after deciding to part ways with former skipper Brandon Hyde. Despite having some of the most exciting young prospects in all of professional baseball, the Orioles had one of the most disappointing first halves of the season.

“The Baltimore Orioles fired manager Brandon Hyde on Saturday, hoping a new leader can spark a turnaround of the most disappointing team in Major League Baseball. Hyde, who had managed the Orioles through the end of their rebuild and helped lead them to the past two postseasons, oversaw an underwhelming start. The Orioles fell to 15-29,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote.

With only a month and a half remaining in the regular season, it’s time for Baltimore to start considering potential managerial candidates. One name that stands out is David Ross, who was let go by the Cubs in a surprising move.

“Another former World Series champion who managed one team, Ross was supposed to be retained by the Cubs as they escaped their rebuild, but he was ultimately let go once Craig Counsell became available. Ross went 262-284 in his four seasons managing the Cubs, successfully navigating them through a rebuild and helping them earn their first winning season (in 2023) since 2019. As a two-time World Series champion, Ross would be a good fit for any of the available openings,” Call to the Pen’s Brandon Glick wrote.

Ross showed promise with the Cubs, but when managerial rival Craig Counsell became available, Chicago acted quickly.

“The Chicago Cubs fired manager David Ross and hired Craig Counsell on Monday. The longtime Milwaukee Brewers manager was lured to Chicago with a record-setting five-year, $40 million contract, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote.

Ross would surely welcome a second chance, and Baltimore could be the perfect opportunity—with a young, exciting roster full of potential. The Orioles fanbase is eager to see their team win, and after a season full of letdowns, it's critical that the next manager—possibly Ross—gets this promising group off to the right start in 2026.
