Zack Wheeler is one of the Phillies best starters alongside Aaron Nola. After a blood clot was found, he is now facing a scary timeline for returning in time for a playoff run.

The Philadelphia Phillies have many moves to monitor throughout the winter as some big decisions need to be made. One key situation to watch is whether the Phillies can bring Kyle Schwarber back. The power hitter is on a tear this season, and his contract value seems to be rising daily.

“While Teoscar Hernandez of Los Angeles is mentioned, it seems likely that Schwarber should blow past that $66 million deal he signed. At 32 years old, approaching $100 million for his next deal should likely be closer to the correct number,” SI’s Nick Ziegler wrote.

Another potential move for the Phillies is signing veteran Alex Bregman in free agency.

“Bregman, who is making $40 million this year and signed for two more years at that rate, will likely opt out of his contract and seek a longer-term deal. He missed time this season with a quad injury but has hit .299/.379/.542 in 327 plate appearances. It appears Boston would be his first choice in free agency, but he is an obvious fit with several other contending teams including the Phillies,” The Athletic’s Jim Bowden wrote.

Focusing on this season, the Phillies may not get Zack Wheeler back after discovering a blood clot.

“Phillies right-handed starter Zack Wheeler was placed on the injured list with a right upper extremity blood clot, Phillies president of baseball operations David Dombrowski announced Saturday following the Phillies’ 2-0 loss to the Nationals,” MLB.com’s Byron Kerr wrote.

On Monday, Wheeler received an injury update, and his chances of returning for the playoffs are uncertain.

“A timeline for Wheeler's recovery has not yet been determined, the team said, and manager Rob Thomson told reporters he won't know if and when Wheeler can return to the mound this season until they receive more information,” USA Today’s Gabe Lacques wrote.

The Phillies will want Wheeler on the postseason roster if they hope to make a deep run. Blood clots are tricky, and while it would be ideal for him to be out there, it’s better that the issue was discovered early. Wheeler is taking everything day by day, but a comeback this season may be a long shot.
