🎾 The Big Two meet again
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz will face off this afternoon in the final of the Cincinnati Open. Because of course they will.
Run it back: Sinner and Alcaraz are just the third duo this century to meet in the final of four consecutive big events (i.e. Grand Slams and Masters 1000). The other two? Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal in 2006 and Nadal vs. Novak Djokovic in 2011.
Head-to-head: Alcaraz holds an 8-5 advantage in the all-time series, including a 2-1 record in the three finals comprising this historic streak.
Italian Open (May 18): Alcaraz def. Sinner, 7-6, 6-1
French Open (June 8): Alcaraz def. Sinner, 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6
Wimbledon (July 13): Sinner def. Alcaraz, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4
The Big Two: It wasn't that long ago that Djokovic, Federer and Nadal ruled the court as the Big Three, winning a mind-boggling 66 of 80 majors from 2003-23. And while Sinner and Alcaraz have a ways to go before entering that territory, their reign as the Big Two at least warrants being mentioned in the same breath.
Sinner has been ranked No. 1 for 63 consecutive weeks since first landing there last June, and enters today's final at 31-3 on the year, including a 26-match win streak on hard courts.
Alcaraz, who's been ranked no worse than No. 3 since Sept. 2022, has gone 53-6 this year and seeks his Tour-leading sixth title of the season.
And most importantly, at least from a historical perspective: They've combined to win the last seven Grand Slams in a row, and nine of the last 12.
Further reading: "Changeover," a new book by author and Defector Media co-founder Giri Nathan that examines the Sinner-Alcaraz rivalry and this new era of men's tennis, comes out tomorrow.
🎓 Michigan case exposes NCAA's fragile authority
The NCAA ruled on the Michigan sign-stealing scandal on Friday, hitting the Wolverines with a series of fines, suspensions and other sanctions but stopping short of punitive penalties such as a postseason ban or vacated wins.
From Yahoo Sports' Jay Busbee:
For whatever hardship the NCAA's penalty will cause Michigan — a few new T-shirt slogans in Columbus, some slightly postponed redecorations to a couple stadium luxury suites — the larger truth is this: the Michigan case has revealed how fragile the NCAA's authority is now.
In its report released Friday, the NCAA indicated specifically that due to the severity of the violations and Michigan's status as a repeat offender, "a postseason ban is required in this case."
However, just a few lines later, the report notes that "a postseason ban would unfairly penalize student-athletes for the actions of coaches and staff who are no longer associated with the Michigan football program. Thus, a more appropriate penalty is an offsetting financial penalty."
That's it right there. The NCAA isn't hammering schools with program-wrecking postseason bans, it's just serving them with bills. And given the vast resources pouring into the game now, that's not a punishment that will leave a mark.
There's no love lost between the NCAA and Michigan, and the NCAA swung as hard as it realistically could at the Wolverines. But the penalties will hit with all the force of a well-swung pillow.
Bottom line: The days of the NCAA carpet-bombing an athletic department into submission (see: SMU) appear to be over. The game has grown too large for its regulators to regulate.
