A petition has been launched after a high school abruptly cancelled its entire 2025 football season.

Central High School in Missouri is two weeks away from opening the 2025 football season. The first game of the year is scheduled for late August. However, no game will be played. There will be no season opener - and no games the rest of the way.

The high school near the Lake of the Ozarks abruptly decided to cancel the entire 2025 football season, due to a lack of student participation. The school's athletic director cited roster size and player safety as the reason.

In the wake of the decision to cancel the entire 2025 football season, a petition has been launched, hoping the school will reverse course.

“It’s your own people doing it, not like a different school, it’s your school, your administrators. They took it away from you without even a choice,” said David Bitok, captain of the Central High School football team.

The petition has close to 2,000 signatures

"At Central High School in Springfield, MO, the Central Bulldogs have the spirit, the dedication, and the talent to have their own varsity football team, yet we're being told that we can't compete with other schools. This notion undermines both the hard work of our students and the passion of our community," the petition states.

"Each year, our students put in countless hours training, practicing, and honing their skills for the love of football. But without a varsity team, their efforts and dreams of showcasing their talents remain unfulfilled. It's not just about playing the game; it's about representing our school, building school pride, and giving our students the opportunity to compete at the highest level.

"Across the state of Missouri, numerous schools our size compete successfully in varsity football. The size of our student body and our resources cannot hold us back. What differentiates successful sports programs from others is the belief in students' potentials and the support from the school administration and community.

"Establishing a varsity team for the Central Bulldogs would do more than just allow us to compete; it would bring our community together, inspire future students, and showcase the spirit and resilience that Central High School exemplifies. Our student-athletes deserve the chance to play under the Friday night lights and to be celebrated for their dedication on and off the field.

"Sign this petition to urge the Springfield School Board to recognize the capabilities and potential of our students. Let's give our Central Bulldogs the varsity football season they deserve!"
