Miami coach Mario Cristobal broke down where Carson Beck and his relationship with other player stands as the season approaches.
It’s not every day you produce the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft at quarterback and have a chance to accomplish the same feat a year later. But for Miami, the addition of Carson Beck has made it a possibility.
Beck has come in and immediately made himself at home this offseason. He has worked through an injury that cost him some spring action, but he’s looking like himself again this fall.
His knowledge level and relationship with his teammates has blown away his coaches. And that’s a big deal for the ‘Canes.
“His experience shows because he knows what it’s supposed to look like and he has a lot of familiarity with our concepts,” coach Mario Cristobal said. “And the amount of time that he spends with our people, it’s extraordinary. He’s here early, he’s here late. He’s got a great relationship with those guys, because even while he was hurt he spent a lot of time around the receivers and the offensive linemen and they forged some really strong relationships.”
Carson Beck is healthy again, which should give him the chance to bounce back from a so-so 2024 season. Beck still put up big numbers with Georgia last fall, but turnovers were an issue and he wasn’t quite as sharp as he was in 2023.
Now he’s got a whole new cast of characters around him. Adjusting to the new personnel has been as much the task as anything for Carson Beck.
For Cristobal, his addition has forced some players to adapt. They have to be on board or risk being left behind.
“We throw out sensitivity around here, man. If you’re sensitive, it’s not going to be fun,” Cristobal said. “You’ve got to take legitimate coaching and the right type of feedback. And sometimes it’s professional criticism.
“And those guys have the type of relationship where they can work out the kinks and really push it and push themselves to actually high effort opportunities and get that performance level at a particular route, a particular concept to the level we want it to. And that’s hard, because that’s a lot of repetition. And it’s hot, and it’s day after day.”
Carson Beck? He’s doing his part to get Miami ready for the season.
The Hurricanes are hoping to crash the College Football Playoff party this time around after narrowly missing it last year. In large part, it’ll be up to how Beck performs.
“I think he leads in that way,” Cristobal said. “I think he’s got a great relationship with the offensive line as well, which helps a bunch as it relates to the protections in the run game. All in all the passing game keeps getting more in sync as fall camp keeps going on and on. And the experience of Carson Beck, it’s really showing up strong.”
