Travis Trickett is thriving in his role as the senior offensive assistant.

Travis Trickett has spent a lot of time in different roles on the football field and his most recent is the senior offensive assistant at West Virginia.

As part of his duties, Trickett is responsible for the organizational aspect of practice and ensuring that everything is in place for head coach Rich Rodriguez.

It’s Rodriguez who serves as the offensive coordinator and calls the plays for the Mountaineers, but Trickett is charged with setting everything up for him. Then comes the football aspect, where Trickett helps to feed Rodriguez information during practice which allows the position coaches to focus on their own rooms.

“So, coach can just coach and I can look at the overall operation and make sure that’s set up the way it’s supposed to be set up and then give big picture thoughts,” he said.

When West Virginia elects to split up practice, Trickett will take one side while Rodriguez is on the other and he ensures that everything is set up for him to lead the offense.

It’s a role that fits Trickett considering after the spring where he pinch-hit as the running backs coach he has been at every position on the offensive side of the ball outside of the line during his career. And even there he has some family experience being the son of offensive line coach Rick Trickett.

“He’s going to tell us what he wants and we’re going to do it and the moment he wants an opinion he asks us. He’s very welcome to input,” Trickett said of Rodriguez.

Trickett was initially on staff with Rodriguez as a student assistant during his first tenure and has seen how he has evolved as a head coach during that timeframe. Rodriguez has displayed the ability to continue to add to his scheme while adapting to the personnel around him.

Rodriguez has even spoken with the staff that he loves winning so much that he isn’t going to resist change.

“Flexibility with personnel is something that has advanced over the years,” Trickett said.

But one thing that is the same is that no matter what the defense does, Rodriguez and his offense is going to try to make them stop their offense.

“You live by that every day,” he said.
