Cubs could move on from solid catcher after Miguel Amaya returns from injury

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya is expected to return from injury after the All-Star break.

The Chicago Cubs have a lot to think about over the next several weeks leading up to the trade deadline and beyond.

At 54-36, the Cubs are the fourth-best team in Major League Baseball and have a three-and-a-half game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League Central.

Chicago’s dominant offense has been enough to overcome some pitching woes, and part of what makes the offense so good is catcher production.

Carson Kelly could have been an All-Star this season and Miguel Amaya was having an excellent season prior to an oblique injury that has kept him out of action since May 24.

The Cubs called Reese McGuire up from Triple-A Iowa and he had his first multi-homer game in his first with the team.

McGuire has five home runs and 10 RBI while slashing .237/.262/.508 in 18 games with Chicago.

Unfortunately for McGuire, Amaya is slated to return from injury sometime after the All-Star break and will go back to splitting catching duties with Kelly.

“This is a tough break for McGuire who deserves a roster spot, but since he's out of options, there's a chance that his play will lead to either the Cubs trading him to a team needing catching depth or a waiver claim,” wrote FanSided’s Zachary Rotman.

Considering the Cubs have nobody on their weak bench who can actually hit, there’s a possibility that McGuire sticks around as a third catcher and pinch-hits off the bench with an occasional start.

It’s rare to see teams carry three catchers, but the Cubs would be smart to do so.
