Tottenham Hotspur have reopened negotiations with Burnley regarding the potential transfer of French defender Maxime Esteve, according to L’Equipe.
The 23-year-old, who is under contract with Burnley until 2029, was previously the subject of a bid from Tottenham during the final hours of the winter transfer window.
Tottenham made an offer estimated at €24 million for Esteve in January, but the bid was rejected, with Burnley reportedly demanding more than €35 million for the player at that time.
Five months later, Tottenham have returned to the negotiating table with Burnley.
Burnley are keen to keep hold of Esteve as they prepare for their return to the English top flight, but the prospect of playing Champions League football may be too big an opportunity to deny Esteve.
Nonetheless, the Clarets are in a strong position to negotiate and are expected to demand a substantial transfer fee.
Speaking about his future last month, Esteve expressed his desire to play for one of the Premier League’s leading clubs.
“My dream is to play for a top-six team in England,” he told Foot Mercato (h/t Burnley Express).
“I wouldn’t say there is any club in particular, but my dream is to go there.”
Esteve’s performances over the past season have drawn attention for his composure and physical presence at the back.
The Frenchman played all 46 games for Burnley, who conceded just 16 games and lost out to Leeds United in the title race only on goal difference.
He ranked in the top 10 for accurate passes per game (60.5) of all Championship centre-backs and would be a shrewd acquisition for Spurs, who could be set to part ways with Cristian Romero.
Romero is attracting interest from Atletico Madrid, although the La Liga outfit are yet to submit an offer.
