The long wait is just about over, friends. At this time next week, we will be getting ready to watch college football games with a soft opening to the 2025 season in Week Zero. Kansas State and Iowa State will get the party started in Ireland for a Big 12 game across the pond. The longest offseason in sports is just about over. This is our last weekend without football games that count for a very long time.
It’s time to celebrate.
Over at Kroger Field today, Kentucky will hosts its second and final intrasquad scrimmage of fall camp. This will serve as the final real opportunity for players to move both up and down the depth chart. Then at some point next week, the Cats will shift into game prep for Toledo with the Week 1 kickoff on Aug. 31 slowly inching closer. It’s just about go time.
Luckett’s Play Sheet: What we know heading into Kentucky’s final scrimmage of fall camp (KSR+)
We will hear from Mark Stoops and select Kentucky players after the scrimmage this afternoon. Some updates are on your way. It’s just about football time.

Mark Pope thinks Otega Oweh can be one of the top defensive players in college basketball
Otega Oweh is entering his senior season at Kentucky coming a banner year where the wing set career-highs in points (16.2), rebounds (4.7), assists (1.7), and steals (1.6). The former Oklahoma transfer should receive some preseason All-American recognition later this offseason.
Kentucky head coach Mark Pope has been very excited to have Oweh back in Lexington and believes a special year is on the way for the veteran.
“When it worked out that he was coming back, I couldn’t get ‘Oweh, Oweh, Oweh, Oweh’ out of my head, man,” Pope told Matt Norlander of CBS Sports. “It’s just the gratitude. He’s got so much more to his ceiling, clearly, you know?”
“Otega Oweh, coming in the summer after he’d gone through the entire NBA process, after he had one of the historic seasons as a player at Kentucky — which is hard to do — with no break comes in here,” Pope said. “He did things defensively this summer that I would walk off the floor and be like, ‘I don’t even understand what I’m seeing on the court.’ It’s a real credit to him.”
Becoming a stopper could be the next piece for Oweh. Kentucky’s best player could be on the verge of a monster season.
Pat Riley is getting a statue
The Los Angeles Lakers announced that former head coach Pat Riley will soon have a statue erected outside of Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The famous franchise is now honoring the coach of the Showtime Lakers.
Riley, 80, will join the likes of basketball legends Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and Kobe Bryant as one of the select bronze statues located outside the Lakers’ arena. He becomes the eighth basketball name to be honored with a statue by the franchise. Riley also played for the Lakers from 1970-75 (including the 1972 title team) and spent time as the team’s broadcaster before becoming an assistant on staff in 1979.
It’s officially statue season. A former Cat will be honored by the Lakers. This year’s home game against the Boston Celtics will be a special one out in Los Angeles.
Milwaukee Brewers are inevitable
Are the Milwaukee Brewers ever going to lose another baseball game? That is a question that many are asking after the NL Central leader erased an 8-1 deficit on Friday night at Great American Ballpark to come storming back for a 10-8 win over the Cincinnati Reds. This was Milwaukee’s 13 straight victory.
The Brewers now have 77 wins and a .636 winning percentage. No one else in the National League has more than 70 wins. They are running away with the regular season pennant. This might just be the year for the Brewers to win the World Series for the first time in franchise history.
Game 2 of the huge series in Cincinnati will take place on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET/5:40 p.m. CT. The Reds remain just a half game back of the New York Mets for the final wild card spot in the National League.
