High school football: Cade Hadley powers Fremont past Weber in season-opening rivalry showdown

Not only was it the opening week of the high school football season, but to crank things up to another level, Weber hosted Fremont Friday night in a high stakes rivalry showdown between the crosstown schools. With Fremont being reclassified to 5A, that meant that the two programs wouldn’t be in the same region for the next two years, which meant the rivalry game had to get moved up to the season opener. Playing in front of a standing room only crowd, Fremont made sure to put on a show as the Silverwolves led right from the very start and cruised to a 42-10 victory.

PLEASANT VIEW – Not only was it the opening week of the high school football season, but to crank things up to another level, Weber hosted Fremont Friday night in a high stakes rivalry showdown between the crosstown schools.

“This is always a huge game for us and we look forward to it every year,” said running back Cade Hadley. “It’s definitely different playing it as the season opener, but it also helped us throughout the offseason knowing we’d be playing them because we knew we had to play our A game.”

Fremont certainly did that, as its only two mistakes of the game were a tipped pass that went for an interception and getting stopped on the 1-yard line as time expired at the end of the second quarter.

“You never know how the first game of the season is going to go, but I couldn’t be prouder of our team tonight, “ said Fremont head coach Nate Tuatagoloa.

“They played really well. Obviously there were some things we needed to improve on, but overall, I thought the guys played fantastic and were in midseason form.”

The Silverwolves were up 42-0 at the end of the third quarter and it appeared they were well on their way to surpassing the 50-0 victory that took place in the same stadium in 2011.

But Weber didn’t quit as running back Wyatt Neilsen took the handoff and ran 14 yards for a touchdown to end the shutout with eight minutes to go in the game. Then a few minutes later, Zach Jenkins stepped up and connected on a 31-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 42-10.

But it was much too little, too late, as Fremont built up an insurmountable lead thanks to a plethora of star powers. Hadley finished with three touchdowns on the day and quarterback Manase Tuatagaloa threw a touchdown to Moa Salesi to go with a bunch of rushing yards.

Also, Salesi had a bunch of all-purpose yards and Chase Blanch and Taylor Graham each had a touchdown as well.

Fremont’s offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage as it opened up huge holes for every running back to run through.

“They made it easy for us,” Hadley said with a big smile after the game. “All the credit goes to the offensive line.”

Added Tuatagaloa: “They played great tonight and opened up some huge holes. I’m pretty sure I could have ran through those. We have a lot of playmakers on this team and I’m also fortunate to have such great coaches. I couldn’t do what I do without them.”

Even Fremont’s special teams got in on the action, as the Silverwolves started the game off with a pooch kid and recovered the ball at the 16-yard line. The offense wasted no time, scoring in 17 seconds to set the tone for the rest of the game.

With the win, Fremont has earned back-to-back victories in the rivalry for the first time since 2015-16.

Next up the Silverwolves will hit the road to face former Region 1 foe Davis, while Weber will look to bounce back on the road next week against Brighton.
