A shutout is always a thing of beauty, and doing it against a talented team that happens to also be a longtime foe makes it even sweeter.
Top-ranked Corner Canyon dominated every aspect of its season opening battle with Bingham Friday night, winning 45-0.
The Corner Canyon defense never let Bingham find its groove, which led to punt after punt and turnovers on downs. That then led to the Chargers getting the ball back and owning the time of possession as they moved up and down the field.
Their shortest drive came on the first possession when Helaman Casuga tossed the Chargers’ first snap to Kai Meza, who then turned on the jets for what will likely be one of the longest scores in high school football this season at 96 yards.
Casuga was under center again for the Chargers after an injury cost him a chunk of last season, and the Texas A&M commit didn’t disappoint as he crossed 150 yards in the first half.
“First play, I’m not going to lie, was a little nerve racking,” said Casuga. “I knew it was going to be open, and I just let it out here and let my receiver and line do their thing.
“I was a little rusty, but it was great to be back.”
The crazy part about the first strike was that the Miners looked to have pinned Corner Canyon with a great punt. They followed up their next drive with another great punt that also pinned the Chargers near their own end zone, but Corner Canyon’s offense proved too much as Weston Briggs pounded out a 40-yard run to start the drive and followed it up with a 17-yard dash.
The Chargers looked to be rolling before a sack forced them into a field goal. Kicker Davis Nelson made good on his 32-yard boot, and was busy the rest of the night for the Chargers who were up 10-0 with 3:01 left in the first quarter.
Briggs did find the end zone on the ensuing drive to put Corner Canyon up 17-0 with 9:31 left in the second quarter. The running back tallied over 125 yards in the first half behind an outstanding performance by the Chargers’ offensive line who starred again with Briggs on the next drive.
This time it was a run from 8 yards out to extend the lead to 24-0.
“We had to get the first-game jitters out of the way,” said Briggs. “Our line looked so good. They were just awesome tonight.”
Corner Canyon continued its first half surge, scoring again with five seconds left in the half. This time Casuga found Lucas Jackson to make it a salty 31-0.
“We had a good start to the game and kept things going,” said Corner Canyon coach Eric Kjar. “Our defense played great, and offensively, I don’t think we punted until our second to last drive with our younger kids in.”
The Chargers added two more scores in the third quarter and then made substitutions to get their backups and underclassmen playing time.
For Kjar, it was a big win to help kick off the Chargers’ 2025 campaign, but he also felt like there were some things they could improve on.
“We want to win, but we’ve got to clean everything up with it,” said Kjar. “We’ve got to be good at all the stuff, so we’ll go back and look at the film where we missed some blocking assignments and had some penalties. We need to clean those things up.”
Corner Canyon now turns its sights to a tough road assignment in Florida against West Broward next week.
