The Toronto Blue Jays avoided a sweep on Sunday with a dramatic comeback win over the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers. Despite losing the weekend series, Toronto’s lead in the AL East grew to 4 1/2 games because the second-place Boston Red Sox dropped a third straight game on Monday.
The Blue Jays’ offense has been a driving force all year, averaging 4.6 runs per game (sixth in MLB), and they have continued to produce despite playing without veteran designated hitter George Springer.
The 35-year-old right-handed slugger had been enjoying a bounce-back season, batting .291 with an .889 OPS and 18 home runs over 101 games.
George Springer Progressing Toward Return
Springer has been out since July 28 when he suffered a concussion during the ninth inning of a game against the Baltimore Orioles. He had been scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo on Aug. 6, but that was delayed because he had not cleared all of his concussion tests.
Ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Chicago Cubs, manager John Schneider updated Springer’s status.
“Other updates via Blue Jays manager John Schneider: George Springer is back with the team doing baseball activity, hitting off machine, hope is he clears MLB protocol in next few days so he can begin a rehab assignment with Buffalo,” wrote Shi Davidi of Sportsnet Canada.

Springer’s Return Could Boost Toronto’s Push for AL East Title
Springer has missed Toronto’s last 12 games, during which the team has gone 6–6.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Ty France have filled in at designated hitter while Springer recovers. Toronto hopes he returns soon to help fuel the closing push of a team seeking its first division title since 2015.
