Aaron Boone and the New York Yankees have greatly struggled over the past couple of months.
Former All-Star Sends Message on Aaron Boone as Calls Mount for Yankees Firing originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
After their World Series appearance last year, many had high hopes for the New York Yankees this season. For the first couple of months to begin the season, this high expectation was met as New York was among the best teams in the majors. However, things have not gone well for them recently.
According to StatMuse, the Yankees are 21-19 since June 15, and they are 3-7 through their first 10 games of August. This includes losing their first five games to begin the month.
Currently, the Yankees are 63-56 and are six games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the AL East lead. Furthermore, they are only one game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians for the final AL Wild Card spot.
Amid their struggles, many Yankees fans have been calling for the team to fire manager Aaron Boone. However, recently, Boone received a supportive message from a former All-Star who believes he is not the problem.
With how poorly the Yankees have played recently, it is not too surprising to see fans clamoring for Boone to be fired. However, the California native still has some support, including from former MLB first baseman Eric Hosmer.
Recently, Hosmer spoke about giving credit to Boone and explaining that he believes most of the blame falls on the players, who he says are playing "sloppy baseball" (h/t OverDrive on TSN).
“I see a lot of things. First of all, Aaron Boone, I credit what he is doing right now, believe it or not. He continuously takes it for the players," Hosmer said. "You continue to see sloppy baseball on the basepaths, defensively, and he continues to take those bullets, so to speak, in the media. He’s putting his players in a position where it’s like, ‘Hey, I’m going to take all the bullets, I’m going to take all the attention, so you guys go out there and play.’"
The Yankees Need to Get Back on Track
At this rate, the Yankees are in legitimate danger of missing the playoffs altogether this season. Given that they were in the World Series less than a year ago, this development is a bit shocking.
It is not too late for New York to figure things out, but time is ticking. With a little over a month remaining, they must end their season strong and on a high note. If they do, they will have a lot of momentum for a deep playoff run. However, if they do not, they will end the season in disappointment, and the organization may have some tough decisions to make in the offseason.
