Dodgers' trade proposal for Paul Skenes hinges on one key player

Could Los Angeles land the best pitcher in baseball?

The Los Angeles Dodgers would surely love to acquire Paul Skenes.

So would every other team in baseball.

It's not clear that the Pittsburgh Pirates are close to ready to consider trading their superstar right-handed ace pitcher, though.

But if they consider it, the Dodgers have enough assets to make a run at a good trade offer.

ESPN's David Schoenfield pitches a deal that gets Skenes for Dalton Rushing, Josue De Paula, Alex Freeland, Emmet Sheehan and Jackson Ferries.

The Pirates might ask for an even bigger piece, though.

Here's how Schoenfield breaks down the offer:

"As the Dodgers' pitching injuries have piled up again, Skenes could be a match. Rushing is blocked at catcher by Will Smith, and he and De Paula probably have more power upside (De Paula has drawn Yordan Alvarez comparisons) than Clark and McGonigle. The Pirates might, understandably, ask for Roki Sasaki, and that could be the deal-breaker for the Dodgers."

Skenes is better than Sasaki, of course, but that would be a lot to give up in addition to the Japanese star.

But it's always going to cost a fortune to land the best pitcher on the planet.

It could still be worth it for the Dodgers, whose unlimited pockets make it easier to fill any holes that might pop up in the lineup.

Skenes is a foundational piece, and if he's available at some point, the Dodgers should try to make the deal happen.
