The Boston Red Sox have really rallied this year, thanks to the efforts of their new superstar third baseman, Alex Bregman. However, his future in Boston is up in the air right now.
As of now, Bregman has a three-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox, but he can opt out at any point. Some people thinks he’s planning on leaving due to some quotes from him, but some think he’ll stay. CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa believes he’ll do both, sort of.
“Bregman opts out and eventually agrees to a new long-term contract with the Red Sox. He's a Boras client, so expect Bregman to see what's available in free agency, but I get the sense both sides are motivated to stay together. Boston's cheap (and excellent) young core makes it easy to fit a new contract for Bregman into ownership's not-as-ample-as-it-should-be budget,” Axisa wrote.
So, technically, Bregman will leave by opting out, but really he’s just doing it for a longer deal and more money, which the man deserves. He’s been a stellar player this year.
This season, Bregman is slashing .299/.379/.542/.921 with 22 doubles and 16 home runs. He was also voted as an All-Star, and probably will be in the race for some awards at the end of the season.
Hopefully, this is the case for Bregman, as he has shown he can rock Fenway, and be a true leader for this team. Sox fans should want him for a long time, and so should the front office.
