Leeds United have reached an agreement in principle to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer following his exit from Everton.
The 28-year-old striker is expected to undergo a medical at Thorp Arch in the coming days, with the move set to be finalised shortly afterwards.
Calvert-Lewin has been without a club since confirming in June that he would leave Everton at the end of his contract.
He spent nine years at Goodison Park after joining from Sheffield United in 2016, scoring 71 goals in 274 appearances.
Everton offered him a new deal last summer, but no agreement was reached. During his time at Everton, Calvert-Lewin earned 11 caps for England, scoring four goals.
However, persistent hamstring and ankle injuries disrupted much of his career on Merseyside.
Calvert-Lewin made 26 league appearances last season, starting 19 times and scoring three goals. He missed 15 matches through injury.
Leeds have been searching for additional attacking options ahead of their return to the Premier League after winning the Championship last season.
Lukas Nmecha, signed from Wolfsburg earlier this summer, and Joel Piroe are currently the club’s only senior strikers.
They had pursued Fulham forward Rodrigo Muniz earlier this summer, but a £32 million bid was rejected. Atalanta have since moved ahead in the race for the Brazilian.
Calvert-Lewin turned down a move to Sunderland before agreeing terms with Leeds. He could make his debut against former club Everton when they visit Elland Road on Monday evening.
The move represents a fresh start for a player who was among the Premier League’s most effective target men on the rare occasions he was fit.
Leeds will hope that with a clean bill of health, Calvert-Lewin can rediscover the form that once made him a key figure for club and country.
